Capacity Building for the National Trust Ideal: A grant from the Helen Hamlyn Trust

The Trustees of INTO are delighted to announce a new grant from the Helen Hamlyn Trust for £275,780, over the next three years, to support the “growth of the charity’s ability to catalyse and grow the international family of National Trusts and to develop and promote the charity’s global messages more visibly”.

INTO Chairman, Dame Fiona Reynolds, said “Over the last ten years INTO has made significant progress towards our mission to ‘promote the conservation and enhancement of the natural and cultural heritage of all nations for the benefit of the people of the world’. Our major constraint has been lack of resource. This new capacity building programme will enable us to increase our impact in working towards this mission.”

The funding from the Helen Hamlyn Trust, beginning in January 2019 for three years, will enable INTO to:

• appoint a new Deputy Secretary-General who will be an additional energetic, persuasive and effective ambassador for INTO;
• help our member organisations grow, develop their campaigns and share best practice, organised through a new Technical Assistance Programme for which the Deputy Secretary-General will play a pivotal role;
• increase our profile amongst prospective members, partner organisations, supporters and opinion formers, transmitting our and our members’ messages about the importance of heritage to an ever wider audience.

Do you have the tenacity, skills and understanding to deliver this new capacity building project?

We have created a vision and an outline framework and now need someone with a flair for weaving together different project strands (technical assistance programme, membership growth and communications) with a focus on delivering hands-on advice to INTO member organisations.

It’ll be a challenging role that will push and stretch you, but, for the right person, it’s an amazing opportunity to play a central role in an exciting period of INTO’s development.

You’ll be responsible for the design and implementation of TAP-INTO, our new technical assistance programme aimed at helping our member organisations to grow, develop their campaigns and share best practice.  You will also lead INTO’s membership growth and retention strategy and develop a communications plan to increase INTO’s global profile.

You will join INTO’s small, highly motivated and mostly volunteer, global team.  A considerable part of the work will be based in London and/or Swindon and you must be willing to travel extensively internationally.

What you’ll be doing

Working with the INTO Secretary-General, INTO Trustees and member organisations, you will be responsible for delivering all aspects of the project.  You will develop a culture which is notable for creativity, experimentation and sharing learnings across the INTO network.

Your day to day work will vary through the life of the project but will include programme development, practical advice and hands-on support (in country) to INTO member organisations, financial management and administration, membership recruitment and retention, fundraising, project reporting, stakeholder management and advocacy.

You’ll be instrumental in ensuring that all aspects of the project are delivered to meet both INTO and our funder’s requirements.

Who we’re looking for

You’ll be an experienced manager with strong people skills and a deep understanding and experience of working through collaboration and participation. You’ll need to demonstrate:

• Ability to plan strategically, innovate and give advice to a diversity of INTO organisations across the world.
• Developed and well-rounded skills across the wide range of interests of the INTO membership: from fundraising to advocacy; volunteer management to site interpretation; communications to governance.
• Proven team-working ability yet able to operate with considerable independence and discretion, to consult effectively across a wide stakeholder group, make decisions and drive forward activity.
• Excellent communication skills including the ability to motivate, influence, negotiate and build positive relationships.

Helen Hamlyn Trust

The Helen Hamlyn Trust is an independent grant-making Trust.   Its focus is on the initiation of medium- and long-term projects linked to the shared interests of Lady Hamlyn and her late husband Lord Hamlyn. The Trust’s core ethos is to develop innovative projects, which aim to effect lasting change, improve quality of life and create opportunity for the benefit of the public. The Trust works in the fields of medicine; the arts and culture; education and welfare; healthy ageing; international humanitarian affairs; and heritage and conservation in India.

INTO is the umbrella body for the worldwide family of National Trusts which come together to share experiences, ideas and resources.  Set up in 2007 to promote the central role of National Trusts in heritage conservation, it aims to grow the capacity of existing trusts, establish new trusts in countries where they don’t currently exist and provide a global voice for matters of common concern.
