2013 Conference

15th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF NATIONAL TRUSTS, 30 September – 4 October 2013, Uganda

Almost 200 delegates converged in Entebbe to explore the growing appreciation and relevance of heritage for our future well-being. The Conference provided them an opportunity to share and explore new insights on the diversity and relevance of heritage, with an emphasis on the connection between the tangible and intangible, and on strengthening the heritage movement across the world.

A number of papers were presented, highlighting achievments and challenges from such varied countries as Bolivia, England, Nigeria, Australia, Indonesia, and many more. These addressed the Conference sub-themes including:

• Heritage and Sustainable Development (Leadership and heritage; conservation vs development; cultural tourism and development; Financing heritage development)
• Safeguarding our heritage (heritage education; leadership and legislation; politics and heritage as a priority; heritage and the youth)
• Cultural diversity and rights (minority rights and heritage; language; cultural expression under threat; the intangible giving meaning to the tangible)
• Unlocking our diverse potential (National Trusts and their alternatives; international networking; financing and managing our ambitions)

Delegates took part in learning journeys to witness heritage preservation in action, around lake Mburo National Part, the source of the Nile, Buyijja forest and around Kampala and Entebbe.

They also subscribed to the Entebbe-Declaration calling for Global Action to Protect and Promote Tangible and Intangible Heritage, Especially within the least Economically developed nations. Hon. Mary Okurut, Min. for Gender, Labour and Social Development also signed on behalf of the Uganda government.
