The National Trust’s 2020 vision is to involve volunteers in all aspects of what we do. We will only get there if all staff feel confident and capable of working with volunteers and local communities.
Leadership in Volunteering (2014) A short guide for regional leadership teams and General Managers.
The volunteering world is changing with many people having less time to give and wanting to have a stronger role in shaping their experience.
To tap into this potential we need to invest in our managers and leaders to think differently about volunteering and approach volunteer management in a different way. This may look and feel uncomfortable and at times chaotic but the benefits and opportunities are massive.
The Trust is on a journey and is particularly keen to learn from other organisations. Our scale often means we can’t move as fast as we would like – so a lot of the innovation is happening in smaller organisations – so please share!
Below are some links to documents, videos and books that help paint the picture for the need to change
The New Alchemy Volunteering Report – by Nfpsynergy. A follow up to their report on the 21st Century Volunteer and what this may mean for organisations.
Decision Time: Will the voluntary sector embrace the age of opportunity? – by Commission on the Voluntary Sector & Ageing. Recommendations for the need to change to embrace an ageing society with volunteering a key part
The New Breed – we have referenced this book quite a lot and is an easy read
Video with Wally Harbert – Wally is the author of Baby Boomers and the Big Society. He did this video for us and his quotes and messages have really resonated with our managers
