Heritage cities training in Indonesia

The Indonesian Heritage Trust (BPPI/Badan Pelestarian Pusaka Indonesia) in cooperation with INTO held Executive Training on Heritage Cities Master Plan on serial of cities in Indonesia. INTO provided two advisers from our Expert Network to be trainers: Katrinka Ebbe (World Bank Washington) and Lord Donald Hankey (President of ICOMOS UK). BPPI provided facilitators: Suhadi Hadiwinoto, Laretna T. Adishakti, Catrini P. Kubontubuh and Dani B. Ishak.

The training started in Sawahlunto-West Sumatera on 23-25 June 2009, continued to Kotagede-Java on 26-28 June 2009 and ended in Denpasar-Bali on 28-30 June 2009. Issues also under discussion in Jakarta included the revitalisation of old cities, spatial planning and heritage development policy and heritage conservation in Indonesia, in Central Java participants discussed the master plan of Borobudur Temple, and in Denpasar museum development and creative community.

The aim of this training was to build capacity within city government administrations for decision-making related to heritage development, a strategic objective of the Association of Heritage Cities, established in Indonesia in October 2008 for which BPPI is responsible. It is hoped that the training programme will be continued, exploring the various topics in greater detail to achieve the comprehensive understanding of local government officers in heritage conservation.

The programme started with heritage trails to elaborate each city’s heritage district and then continued with classroom sessions of plenary and working groups exercises. At the end of each training programme, participants were invited to present their assignment on selected topics. The city mayors delivered a warm welcome at the opening session.
