We’ve been thinking a lot about partnership in the INTO office lately: partnerships with communities and stakeholders; the importance of working cross-sectorally (urban/rural; state/ngo; private/public); partnerships between INTO member organisations and what it means to be part of the wider INTO family.

We no longer live in a ‘command and control’ world.   We live in the age of partnership.  None of us can do it alone and to achieve our goals, all of our organisations need to work in partnership.  And this is wonderful!

Not only have INTO members joined together with other like-minded organisations to build mutually beneficial partnerships, but INTO itself is a partnership that comes together to share expertise, ideas and resources.  Many of the issues we address can benefit from the involvement of multiple stakeholders and communities.  This workshop will highlight the successes of a number of INTO member organisations and give us an opportunity to learn more about the role and value of heritage trusts today.

3pm              Catherine Leonard, International National Trusts Organisation

3.10pm        Donald Hankey, Kevin Hallaway and Peter Nasmyth, National Trust of Georgia

We were delighted to work with the team setting up the National Trust of Georgia whilst they established themselves and even more pleased to help connect them to heritage conservation expert Donald Hankey and structural engineer Kevin Hallaway who spent two weeks in Georgia earlier this year advising on their first property.

3.30pm        Irena Edwards, Czech National Trust

INTO has been involved in the establishment of the Czech National Trust since its very early days and it is wonderful to see this organisation beginning to flourish.   This year it launched its highly successful ‘Ticket to the New World‘ programme to mark one hundred years of Czech/US diplomatic relations by celebrating the Czech artists, architects and writers who emigrated to America during the last century.

4pm              Margit Bal, Herita (Belgium)

We are proud to say that Herita will host our next INTO Conference, taking place in 2021 – clear your diaries!   Herita is a relatively new member of INTO so we are all looking forward to hearing more from Margit Bal about how her organisation is creating a social movement for heritage by involving and engaging people.

4.20pm         June Taboroff, Innocastle project

Catherine Leonard and June Taboroff both attended the recent study visit to Romania with the EU-funded Innocastle project and will be sharing their experiences of the partnership to date along with insights from the Romanian mission. Innocastle seeks over the next four years to develop new pro-heritage policies in four European regions (Romania, Flanders, Extremadura in Spain and Gelderland).

4.30pm         Nicolae Raitu, Pro Patrimonio Foundation (Romania)

Pro Patrimonio was set up in 2000 to save, preserve and restore the architectural and cultural heritage of Romania. It provides support for the restoration and re-use of historic buildings and actively promotes the use of appropriate construction techniques and traditional craftsmanship. INTO has been advertising Pro Patrimonio’s amazing working holidays for the past few years including sketching, organic gardening, plastering and blacksmithing!

Europe’s cultural heritage surrounds us in the buildings of our cities, our landscapes and archaeological sites. It is preserved not only in literature, art and objects but also in craft skills, stories, food and films.  In its diversity, cultural heritage brings us together.   Across the United Kingdom organisations are participating with events that showcase their heritage and their links to European culture.  Getting involved can be as simple as the promotion of an event that’s already planned or an entirely new event that’s put on especially for this year of cultural heritage.
