INTO Executive Committee Member included in the Queen’s Birthday Honours

On Saturday June 14^th Buckingham Palace announced that Mr. Bishnu Tulsie, Director of the Saint Lucia National Trust and member of the INTO Executive Committee, was included in the Queen’s 2014 birthday honours list, to be conferred with the title of Member of the British Empire.

Mr. Tulsie started his professional career as a Mathematics and Science teacher in his home country, Guyana and from 1980, in Saint Lucia. In 1990 he joined the public service as an Energy, Science and Technology Officer and was promoted to head the department in 1995. He left the public service in 2004 as the government’s Chief Sustainable Development and Environment officer. He was instrumental in setting the trajectory for evolution of government’s environment and sustainable development portfolio and led international negotiations under several multilateral environmental agreements.

In 2004 Mr. Tulsie joined the Saint Lucia National Trust as its director. He led the development of a strategic plan for the organisation and is overseeing its active implementation. Under his stewardship the Trust has achieved financial stability, developed robust conservation and advocacy programmes, strengthened corporate governance and developed a culture of engaging Trust members in programming and accountability.

In addition to his substantive posts, he has worked as a consultant for the United Nations bodies, the Government of Canada, the European Commission and the Government of Saint Lucia on sustainable development and environmental projects, mainly in the field of Multilateral Environmental Agreements. He is an associate of the International Institute for Sustainable Development and is part of a team supporting a global network of sustainable development practitioners preparing to help countries implement the Post 2015 development agenda.

Mr. Tulsie has received awards from the Minister of Environment and the United Nations Environment Programme for outstanding contributions to the protection of the global environment and was recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for his contribution to its award of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for Climate Change.
