Folk Architecture – Learn Traditional Thatching Techniques in Beautiful Central Slovakia

The working holiday:   We are inviting you to help us repair the last remaining building with a thatched roof in the upper Tekov region in Bartošova Lehôtka, central Slovakia.   This is our property which we have been restoring for the last seven years and although small, it is a very rare example of a classic folk architecture building. We will teach you how to build and repair a unique straw thatched roof in a traditional way, under the leadership of three local experts and volunteers. You will be taught thatching techniques and although the majority of the work will take place at ground level in front of this single-storey building, there will be some ladder climbing involved. Participants must therefore have a good level of fitness.

In your leisure time you will be able to enjoy the beautiful Slovakian countryside and visit the completely-preserved medieval towns of Banská Štiavnica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Kremnica, famous for its mint which was originally established in the fourteenth century and is still producing coins almost seven hundred years later.

Meeting point: We will collect participants from Kremnica bus/train station on the first day of the holiday. The nearest airports are Bratislava or Vienna Schwechat.

Accommodation: In a local B&B. Bedding and towels are provided.

This working holidays is organised by the National Trust of Slovakia (NTS), a non-governmental organisation established in 1996. Its mission is to secure permanent protection and sustainable use of the historic environment – heritage sites, objects of great value and sites of natural beauty for the benefit of Slovakia and its people.
