National Trust England, Wales and Northern Ireland

The National Trust for England, Wales and Northern Ireland has run working holidays for over 45 years and in 2014/15 the programme is going from strength to strength. People of all ages are getting involved in all types of projects, helping the Trust in its work but, just as importantly, making the absolute most of their spare time. One of the things participants regularly say is how much they enjoy the chance to work alongside specialists and to learn from National Trust experts. And the Trust has got some pretty unique skills to share. This year you could find yourself working on Hughenden’s grand Victorian parterre with one of the Head gardeners, exploring the Tyntesfield Estate at night surveying nocturnal wildlife or, out on a Lake District fell farm learning how to care for the sheep and lambs.

If you’d rather go behind the scenes, you could help uncover and prepare the collection, at Mr Straw’s house, ready for the new visitor season. Whichever holiday you choose, you’ll be picking up new skills and new friends in equal measure. A working holiday is a safe way to travel on your own and a great way to meet new people. By taking part in a Working Holiday, you’re not only helping that particular area in a very immediate way, but you’re helping the Trust keep all these wonderful places open for everyone to experience.
