Climate Change – A Global Issue which threatens our Heritage!

Climate-Change-header2

INTO has been involved in advocacy on behalf of our global heritage for many years

In 2009 at the ICNT meeting in Dublin the delegates unanimously approved the Dublin Declaration, which had been developed over the preceding year by representatives of the National Trusts from England, Ireland, the United States, Australia, Canada, Europe and Asia.

Representatives of INTO and several National Trusts attended COP 18 in Copenhagen in 2009.

In 2011 at the ICNT meeting in Victoria British Columbia, delegates again unanimously approved the Victoria Declaration, which expanded upon the Dublin Declaration by specifically highlighting the impacts on Cultural Heritage from climate change.

Copies of the Dublin and Victoria Declarations are available in a number of languages.

DUBLIN AND VICTORIA DECLARATIONS
In 2012, INTO reaffirmed its call for recognition of the social and cultural factors associated with the implications of climate change that have been missing in the global debate. Our position is outlined in the ‘Victoria Declaration’, which has been widely disseminated, including at the UN Climate Change talks in Doha, Qatar, and often sited.

The Victoria Declaration received unanimous support from delegates at the 14th International Conference of National Trusts, held in Victoria BC, Canada in October 2011.

The history of INTO’s work regarding Climate Change is captured in an article by the previous INTO Chair, Simon Molesworth, AO, QC.

You can find an article about the need to address the cultural and social cost of climate change, co-authored by Tim and Simon Molesworth (members of the INTO COP18 delegation), which appeared on the last day of COP18 in the widely read daily publication “Outreach”.

Thanks to the efforts of INTO Chairman, Simon Molesworth, and INTO Director, Oliver Maurice, we were invited to sign an open letter urging Ministers to take urgent, proactive action to address loss and damage at this year’s UN climate talks. INTO joins organisations like CARE, WWF, ActionAid, Kiribati Climate Action Network, Greenpeace, Oxfam, Action on Churches Together and many others to express concerns about tackling climate change and its impacts.

“INTO is an outstanding organisation which has achieved wonders with extremely limited resources in a very short space of time. As soon as greater resources are available to it, I would wish INTO to take on an even wider global role on such issues as global warming and climate change and saving heritage in peril around the world” Matrin Scicluna, Treasurer, Din I’Art Helwa, National Trust of Malta.
